YUNG KAI & SUNKIS

Q&A
GN: The two of you released a collaboration song, “Where The Sunlight Glows”. Tell us how that song came about?
yung kai: When I found out that Sunkis was also a part of the Head In The Clouds line-up, I immediately thought that making a song with him would go crazy. Since we were both Chinese and had similar backgrounds, I figured that we could make a song together with both English and Mandarin lyrics. I was sitting in my hotel room when Sunkis sent me a beat that his producer had been working on and after I heard this beat I instantly thought of this melody in my head which I thought was a perfect fit for this song. We got into the studio together and everything went super smoothly.
sunkis: We were originally mutuals on Instagram and after seeing each other on the lineup, we reached out to one another and eventually linked in person in LA. I took kai to get marinated crab, hung out with him for a bit and we really hit it off. Once we established that bond, the song came together naturally and quickly.
GN: Both of you are a part of the Chinese diaspora, what does it mean to you to know that you’re representing China on a global scale?
sunkis: It means the world, being able to represent and share my culture and heritage in global stages and appearances is super important to me. Whether that’s through music or the brand I’m trying to build, I’m super proud and honored to be Chinese.
yung kai: I still cannot believe that I am representing China on a global scale and it’s even a shock that so many budding musicians look up to me. Moving forward, I will try my best to keep working hard to represent China on a global scale in a positive light.
GN: Both of you have worked alongside some incredibly talented musicians thus far. Who is your dream collaboration when it comes to music?
yung kai: My dream collaboration when it comes to music is definitely wave to earth.
sunkis: My dream collaboration will hands down be Justin Bieber.
GN: How did the experience of working with each other affect your view on future collaborations, if at all?
yung kai: Honestly, working with sunkis was the first time I ever worked with another artist in a studio. I never had any prior experience with this so working with him really set the bar high. I had so much fun working with him while also getting work done so there are some really big shoes for another artist to fill.
sunkis: It reconfirms my passion to collaborate with other artists. I enjoy naturally connecting with artists that I vibe well with and have always loved being collaborative with my music. Once I’ve formed a connection with another artist, things usually flow pretty organically in the studio and turn into something special
GN: Outside of making music, do you have any other passions or projects you're working on that you'd like to share with Goodnight's readers?
yung kai: Outside of music I'm grinding Valorant, so get ready to see me on VCT.
sunkis: I’m currently working on my own fashion brand “On Tour Studios”, coming live soon!
GN: Looking ahead, what kind of roles or projects are you most excited to explore in the future?
yung kai: In the future, there are other creative fields that I would really like to dive into. Things like acting and art were both some of my interests when growing up. Although I'm not too good at acting or drawing, there's always time to learn.
sunkis: I’m excited for my first mixtape to come out, lots of singles that I’m stoked about. That should be coming this fall alongside my first headline tour in NA.
GN: What does the term Goodnight mean to you?
yung kai: Goodnight is a word that my mom says before she tucks me into bed.
sunkis: It’s a way to acknowledge the need for peace and calm, a reset button before starting the next day.
